New York - Planes and an Apartment

Charlottetown to New York

First, let me say that I do not like flying.

Okay, now back to it. I realised with a start this morning on waking that I had totally forgotten to do Jeannie's suggestion on the Island. Apparently there's a place just after Confederation Bridge where, for a couple of dollars, you can go in and dress up as Anne - complete with hat and red wig - and a guy will take your photo with your own camera (you don't have to pay for a a studio shot.)

Jeannie said he told her he'd make her look 16 again. He told a more mature woman in the group he'd make her look 25 again. I was interested to know how old he thought I could look!

I am wondering if it was my subconscious that made me forget it - I'm really not one for dressing up and taking photos, no matter how hilarious the results might have been. When I come back this way, I'll do it - he'll be telling me he can make me look 65 again.

Another I realised is that I don't like shutters - that's the window dressing of this beautiful suite and they look great but I don't like them as window coverings.

Into the gorgeous lobby for breakfast - I know I posted this photo yesterday, but this is where breakfast was - I sat on a chair on the left, I could have talked to that statue while I ate. Really nice continental breakfast. They also had 'bags on the go' ready for customers leaving before 7. Not sure what was in them as I was leaving after 7, but a great thing to do. They also had an umbrella stand with a heap of umbrellas for customers on rainy days.

Had a bit of time so I wandered down to the wharf and out to the end. The location of this hotel is sensational - a couple of minutes to the wharf, a couple of minutes to the theatre last night - which was good, seeing I had to go there three times!

Headed to the airport, filled the car with 'gas'. Parked the car and walked away - can't remember the model but I wouldn't buy one, just not the car for me. Bought a coffee and sat down to play computer games and check emails/Facebook and so on, for the 2.5 hour wait. It's an international flight so have to get here early. What on earth did we do before the iPad??? Best invention EVER.

Started through Customs and there was a girl with a very cute pug dog. She carried it through the security thing while the carry bag went through the X-ray scanner, back into the bag and onto the plane! Apparently this is quite normal - if the dog can fit under the seat in front, he can come on. I did have visions of a Great Dane sitting in a seat all strapped in, as they do often think they are a lapdog.

I had been surprised by the amount of hotels that said 'pets welcome' or 'pets not welcome' but I can see now that people take their dogs everywhere. I know of two places I'm staying that have dogs and I am looking forward to that.

Walk out and onto the plane - propellers? Seriously? Is this a plane from the 1950s?? Onboard and off and the thing is shaking like a mad thing, have already taken a half tablet and now, knowing there's another flight to come, take an extra quarter.

Guy next to me is chewing his cuticles constantly - it's surprising he has any fingers left if he goes at them at that rate.

Arrive at Montreal, go through Customs and walk for miles to board the next flight - which I am on niw as I type this. They gave me a window seat! So the shade is down as far as possible. Customs is a scary place - I think they try to intimidate, for sure. The one good thing is you have to take your shoes off to go through the X-ray thing.

Have to stop now - landing.

Actually got a really good view of New York, so there is some benefit to a window seat after all. And on arrival...

Arrival at LaGuardia - 3:00. Through Customs to information to book at shuttle - 3:17. Get a bit to eat and wait for shuttle. Shuttle arrives - 4:20. Drive to apartment, here's some sights along the way. Arrive at apartment - 6ish.

Crazy city. No one obeys red lights - pedestrians start walking on their red and get annoyed when they have to stop for cars with right of way. Cars drive through on the red and honk a lot.

Sat next to a lovely lady who let me use her phone to email Shaun, coz my phone isn't working and I don't have SIM card for iPad. She also gave me her address in California in case i get into trouble when I'm staying there. You meet so many nice people travelling alone.

LaGuardia is the only airport that doesn't have captions on its TVs in waiting areas and no free Wi-Fi. So I haven't been able to contact the others. Plan to go to the Dunkin' Donuts where they are meeting and look for them. Will find a Starbucks if need be - it has free Wi-Fi.

As my shuttle pulls up, I spot Adam and Caz, they have just arrived as well. Shaun and Brett join us and we're in our digs for the next six days.

Here's Shaun smoking n the rickety balcony while Brett and Adam filming him doing it and Caz looks on.

He is going down the four flights now as that balcony is really rickety and he doesn't need to rehearse West Side Story.

We get settled then head out to meet a friend of Caz's, have dinner at a meatball place then go to a bandaoke - karaoke with a band. Lots of average singers but a great band. Caz did a fine rendition of Highway to Hell.

And then walked home...
